HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Here’s a thing I’m thankful for:

1924’s Siegfried is the first part of Fritz Lang‘s ambitious Die Nibelungen duology, the other being Kriemhild’s Revenge – the Lord of the Rings of their time, full of camera tricks and visual creativity that broadened the scope of cinema. Check out this scene which features some cutting edge FX and inventive composition, as Lang varies the size of the frame using shadows and foregrounded silhouettes to create frames-within-frames. It’s a tad on the slow side, but every shot is a work of art – like a graphic novel unfolding before your eyes.
