Starship Trooper‘s (1997) “Whiskey Outpost Fight” battle scene is awesome, and remains incredibly powerful to this very day. Ambushed by the enemy, the mobile infantry find themselves fighting for their lives against a brutal swarm. Relentless waves of bugs attack from ground and air, determined to overwhelm these poor (superficial) humanoids. Mix CGI that still holds together, some stellar gunplay, and fantastic creature design from Star Wars vet Phil Tippett and you get an eye-boggling, mind-blowing sequence that still jolts the senses while poking fun at the sensibilities. 14 years on, the battle sequence has aged very well, and I would argue that it has in fact has gotten better. Which says a lot about the creative team involved. Ah, Paul Verhoeven – truly a master of visceral sci-fi satire (see also Robocop & Total Recall).
